Educational Framework Materials

Submitted by sandra on Tue, 2005-10-18 22:12.
The National Center has produced an Educator Toolkit to help educators with their students in the substantive examination of issues related to diversity and democracy. The Educator Toolkit was conceived and designed as a flexible, evolving resource that is both functional and practical, yet can be receptive to change, expansion and further development by input from educators nationally. Its goal is to engage educators and youth in exploring the contributions of culturally and ethnically diverse individuals and communities to the shaping of American democracy.

Educational Framework and Lesson Starters

The National Center's Educational Framework was written by Gary Okihiro, Ph.D, Professor, International and Public Affairs and Director, Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, Columbia University. This document captures the overarching curricular understandings for the educational products and programs of the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy. It also includes sample lessons.

“Fighting for Democracy, Fighting for Me” Sample Unit Plan

A five-lesson unit plan based on the National Center's Educational Framework. It includes reacted resources and activities to accompany each lesson, plus a culminating writing assessment.

This unit plan addresses the essential question: If somebody is denied power, privilege, and equal standing with other Americans, how should he or she respond?
